Bratislava Airport is the main international airport of Slovakia. This is Bratislava’s only airport with scheduled passenger flights. Some airlines use Bratislava to serve nearby Vienna in Austria. In 2008, the airport served 2,218,545 passengers, representing a 9.6% increase compared to 2007 and more than a 700% increase compared to 2001. It is located 9 km to the north-east from the city center, covers an area of 4.77 km² and is known for its extraordinarily good climatic conditions. Bratislava Airport can be reached from the city centre, which is by road 9 kilometers away, or from D1 motorway. Bratislava Airport is located within a one-hour drive of Vienna, Brno and Győr, covering a catchment’s area of four countries, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Today, it serves scheduled and unscheduled, domestic and international flights. The current runways enable the landing of virtually all types of aircraft used in the world today. The airport has eight departure gates for international flights and a separate gate for domestic flights. A new terminal is being constructed, with the first phase to be completed by 2010 and second by 2012. Once completed, the capacity will double from 2.5 to 5 million passengers per annum. The international arrivals hall offers foreign exchange services, coin and card telephones, and a snack bar. At the airport terminal, Car Rental Company has permanent representative. Rent a car at Bratislava airport is located in the arrivals hall. It is a fully-certified international airport, capable of handling even larger jets. At present almost all flights to and from the airport are through low-cost airlines, which is making Bratislava an increasingly popular transit stop between and among points in Europe and to some places in the Middle East. Its small size means faster lines and shorter walks, as well as less expensive parking.
